CMO vertex count much higher than FBX

Does anyone know why the vertex count would be much higer on CMO than on the FBX from which CMO was converted. I am seeing 1300 verts in FBX and over 7000 for the same object in CMO. For another FBX I see 20,000 verts, and it's corresponding CMO is over 100,000. Any ideas ?

This is normal. Modelling tool formats like FBX typically use a separate set of indices per vertex data channel, but GPU formats have a single vertex array combining all the data channels into a single array. That requires a separate vertex any time two adjacent triangles have different normals, different texture coordinates etc.
